We had to fill in a form for PERKESO (Malaysia’s Social Security). There was a column that asked for the keturunan (race) of every person in Figtree. Without thinking I told Vilin to put it down as “Malaysian”.
“Are you sure?” She asked.
“Ya. My dad was born in Malaysia, so am I. I have no intention to go back to China, why should I list myself as Cina?”
So on the form, everyone is officially listed as race = “Malaysian”.
Vilin warned me that the PERKESO officer may question me.
If he does so, I am very glad to argue with him on why I am doing what I am doing.
“Bapa saya orang Malaysia, Ibu saya orang Malaysia, jadi saya orang Malaysia!”
